How should filament, powder, and fibrous-wool samples be prepared?

Filament demonstrations cut and disperse fibers in adhesive; powder demonstrations disperse the powder directly; fibrous-wool demonstrations dilute an ethanol suspension for thin spreading. Select the material-specific method and inspect clumping, overlaps, bubbles, and field density.

Glass-fiber bundles and filaments

Video 11 uses a Hardy microtome for clamping, wetting, and cutting. Videos 50 and 51 demonstrate blade and scissors methods, followed by dispersion, coverslip fixing, and curing. Use each tutorial’s own sampling, cutting, and curing conditions.

Fiber powder

Video 45 places powder at the slide center and disperses it with one or two drops of curing adhesive, followed by coverslip placement, bubble removal, and fixing. Its approximately 40-second UV curing step applies to that powder procedure, not every material.

Fibrous wool and ultrafine glass fiber

Video 68 demonstrates an ethanol suspension: take 10–20 μL of the original suspension, dilute to 100 μL, then spread approximately 15 μL thinly and inspect after evaporation. Mix before sampling because fibers settle, and adjust concentration when overlaps remain.

Preparation and instrument timing

Targets should be separated with identifiable edges and without obvious clumping, bubbles, or stacking. Tutorial times describe preparation steps or caption conditions. Check scan-to-report timing separately; playback duration is not sample turnaround time.
